Stan Sperlak is offering art lessons at one of his seminars worth $250.
Access to Art, a 15 year old not for profit, is on its l0th dance weekend, offering Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company in performance on May l9th at the Middle Township PAC at 7:30 p.m. They will include a premiered piece honoring Maitin, bringing in 14 young dancers, since Sam always liked to bring in the community. The dancers will work with live musicians, and with the dance company of Dorfman, and have work choreographed on them.
Access to Art will also offer two films, developed over the last year, as part of the program of dance, beginning with a film by local filmmaker Craig Rinkerman (with assistance from Northfield’s Will Kahane) of a documentary on Sam Maitin, Philadelphia artist. A 12 minute dance short, by Susannah Newman, will open the dance event at 8 p.m. with Maitin’s color saturated images through which the dancers dance and cavort.. Three dancers are South Jerseyans. Newman, who currently resides in Cape May, headed the dance department at SUNY, choreographed for 50 companies including companies in Sweden and Paris, and taught there for 40 years. She is both choreographer, and film maker. Music, by Ibert, is played by Sue Ann Kahn and friends. Kahn was the daughter of famous architect, Louis I. Kahn, a close friend of Maitin’s. The documentary film features the music of the Mondrian Ensemble, formed by Sam Maitin, to begin Access to Art’s chamber music festival in l998. Maitin was Access to Art’s mentor and collaborator in bringing world class art here. “Sam was so casual, and so unaffected. He just wanted people to get together and to share their work with an audience and with each other. He loved beauty, hated elitism in art, and wanted to bring all people into the experience of art which enriches life.” she said. “He thought that art was just part of life, not the possession of some estranged elite. It was for, by and about people. He was for art for everyman.” she said.
He was, as his wife said, “anti-elite, and anti-drab.” Maitin loved color and drenched his work with it. He thought in color. His works are in major museums here and abroad.” Beitel said.
Choreographer/film maker Newman began a group in New York of film makers from the Institute of Technology in Rochester, choreographers from SUNY and musicians/composers from Eastman. They began a film festival. Her work has already been shown in Rochester to rave reviews at the festival she began with cohorts. It was also shown in Philadelphia, and people are requesting it for performances there and for appearances in venerable Philadelphia institutions.
“We work very hard to pay for these events, which are expensive, since you have to pay for dancers, their housing, the technicians who do the lighting, the live musicians, the renting of the Performing Arts Center, tickets, marketing, etc. We have a wonderful committee who is working on the auction, and if anyone would like to join us, we could always use a few more helpers.” said Barbara Beitel, Access to Art, Inc. Director. “Call me at 465-3963 to sign up.” she said.
Admission to the auction is $20. and includes hors d’oeuvres. There will be a cash bar.
“Our committee has just begun to gather things. The Atlas Motel, Cape May, will give us an overnight, and we are out begging dutifully for other items. If you wish to donate, to help defray the cost of the dance event, call Access to Art, Inc. at (609) 465-3963.
You may also call to reserve your spot at the auction. “We have done auctions for a long time, now, and they are lots of fun, and an incredible amount of work. We are very grateful for the community support that we always receive, and for the people who faithfully attend and work the event.” Beitel said.
