sings Negro Spirituals.
Sister Sledge’s first
national hit came in 1974 when “Love, Don’t
You Go Through No Changes on Me” reached
number 31 on the R.& B charts. Kim was
singing since she was three years old with
her grandmother, an opera star, who took
the girls around with her and had had them
sing in Philadelphia at churches, banquets
and teas. Soon, she expanded their reach
around the globe, on her opera stints.
Kim travelled with her three sisters,
Debbie, Joni and Kathy Sledge, honing their
skills before local and international
audiences. They sang in Europe and in
China. They began to tour the world with
their opera star grandmother as toddlers and
were singing since they were 3, 4, 5 and 7
years old on stages across the world. They
planned to retire when they came home and
were invited by Chic to record “We Are
Family.” They came home to go to college,
teamed up with Chic in the late 70’s, and
reached the height of their popularity
during the disco era. “We didn’t ever think
of growing up and becoming stars,” Kim
said. “We just sang; that’s what we did.
We came home to go to college, to begin our
real careers, and we happened to cut “We Are
Family,” and the rest is history.” she said.
They began in their
churches, and they still sing gospel. Kim,
an ordained minister, for seven years, with
IFCM (International Fellowship at Christian
Ministries,) is part of the Paradise
Project, a network of international prayer
ministries with a creative arts component.
Her sister is currently in Russia. Six years
ago, she gave up her secular singing career,
but continued praising God around the world.
